2009-2010 Mills' Book Drive is a Success!
Many thanks to the Mills students and families who donated books to the Mills' PTA Book Drive. You donated over 700 books!! These books were given to St. Elmo Elementary and they were able to host a book fair at which all the students were able to select a favorite book to take home. Much to their delight, they were also able to take home a book to younger non-school age brothers and sisters! You made the difference in the life of a child while sharing the gift of reading!! MILLS ROCKS!!!
Many special thanks to Renee Welsh on the PTA Outreach Committee for chairing the book drive and to Joy Poole for coordinating the book fair at St. Elmo.
Below are pictures of some of the students selecting their books. Also, check out the banner in the hallway at school given to Mills from the St. Elmo students as a token of appreciation!
Thanks to all our Mills families who supported the many community outreach project the 2009-2010 Mills PTA Community Outreach committee sponsored in the fall. Thanks to all of you, we were able to do the following:
- Collected over 3000 lbs of food for Caritas
- Collected over $250 for Change for Changes to benefit Children in the CPS system through Partnerships for Children
- Collected over 350 coats for Coats for Kids
- Adopted 20 families and had over 100 volunteers involved with the Holiday Adopt a Family project with Odom and hosted a successful party for families at Odom on gift drop off day.
We are planning or spring activities now so stay tuned!

Announcing the newest Mill's ShOUT Award winner!
The Mill's Community Outreach Committee awards Mill's children who are making a difference in the lives of others all on their own with our Mills SHOUT Award (Students Helping Out). This month we would like to recognize Clay Cortez. Clay is a 5th grader at Mills. He recently helped two families he does not know but heard about who lost everything when their home burned down. These two families were sharing a home and have a total of 6 kids (5 girls and 1 boy). Clay and his sister cleaned out their closets and donated clothes for the kids as well as jackets, gloves, hats and shoes. Clay also made sure that each child had a stuffed animal to sleep with. Way to go Clay! Thanks for being an inspiration to others!
Maybe you know a child who organized a drive, helped a neighbor in need, or raised money for a cause. If you would like to nominate a child for this award, please send an email to (committee member is TBD) with a description of the child’s story and picture of him/her (if you are comfortable with us placing in on the website and in the Mills Messenger). We will also have their name/story introduced during the morning announcements. We will ask for nominations several times during the year.
