PDL Support Group
Parents of Differnt Learners is a support group of parents and Mills Staff working together to provide the best learning environment for children who learn differently.  Parents of children with Dyslexia, ADD/HD, Austim, Asberber and other nuerological conditions share information, ideas and support to each other.

Goal of PDL
To work collectively together as parents, teachers and administrators to support each other and the Mills Mission Statement so all students will thrive academically as well as socially despite different learning styles.“With great spirit and high expectations, the Mills staff will develop a learner-centered community of problem solvers, information seekers, and creative thinkers by providing a safe, positive learning environment with respect for individual needs.”

What Is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability.  It refers to a cluster of symptoms, which result in people having difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading.  Students with dyslexia may experience difficulties in other language skills such as spelling, writing, and speaking.  Their problems in language processing distinguish them as a group.  Current studies show 15-20% of the population has a reading disability and of those, 85% has dyslexia.  Dyslexia cannot be cured and is a life-long condition; however, with proper help people with dyslexia can learn to read and/or write well.  Early identification and treatment is key to helping dyslexics achieve in school and in life.  People with dyslexia do not “see backward”.  It results from the differences in the structure and function of the brain.  Many dyslexics are creative and have unusual talent in areas such as art, athletics, architecture, graphics, electronics, mechanics, drama, music or engineering.  They often show talents in areas that require visual, spatial and motor integration and higher level thinking processes.
