What Is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability. It refers to a cluster of symptoms, which result in people having difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading. Students with dyslexia may experience difficulties in other language skills such as spelling, writing, and speaking. Their problems in language processing distinguish them as a group. Current studies show 15-20% of the population has a reading disability and of those, 85% has dyslexia. Dyslexia cannot be cured and is a life-long condition; however, with proper help people with dyslexia can learn to read and/or write well. Early identification and treatment is key to helping dyslexics achieve in school and in life. People with dyslexia do not “see backward”. It results from the differences in the structure and function of the brain. Many dyslexics are creative and have unusual talent in areas such as art, athletics, architecture, graphics, electronics, mechanics, drama, music or engineering. They often show talents in areas that require visual, spatial and motor integration and higher level thinking processes.
