, the librarian at Mills Elementary School. I want to encourage our students to become
independent library users and to foster in them the love of reading for pleasure as well as for learning. I hope the library will be a welcome space where students feel at home and can spend time hearing wonderful stories and learning to use technology to assist them in their work at school. You can also volunteer to assist in the library .
Library Events
Students in grades 3-5 were encouraged to participate in the Texas Library Association’s Bluebonnet Reading Program by voting for their favorite nominated book of 2009, in January. Read the results of the 2007-2008 event.
Students in Pre-K through 2nd grade will be introduced to the Texas Library Association’s 2X2 Reading Program. The TLA's 2009 reading list can be found here. Students in grades K-2 come every other week with their class to the library for storytime and check-out. Students in grades 3-5 come on alternating weeks with their classes to the library for a library lesson and check-out. Pre-K classes visit the library every week for a short storytime and to check out a library book.
Goals
Our goal is to encourage literacy and life-long learning through collaboration between the library, school, staff and community. Our library supports intellectual freedom by selecting materials based on favorable literary reviews, curriculum needs, suggested booklists, and teacher, student and parent requests.
Guidelines for Checking Out Books
Mills students in Pre-K through 1st grade may check out one book for 2 weeks, while students in 2-5 grades may check out two books for 2 weeks. Students are encouraged to check out at least one book they can read and another of their choice. Students may check out additional books upon request for special projects and research.
Parents are encouraged to get a Mills Family Library card and may check out five or six books at a time for two weeks. Overdue notices will be sent to their child’s classroom teacher.
