November 9th

I want to thank all of you who have participated in our No Hassle fundraiser, it was a huge success raising over $18,000.00!! I also want to thank Rachael Steyaert for organizing the No Hassle, she did an incredible job keeping up with all those "Paw Prints" and popsicle parties! The kids were so cute and did their own part by sending in $1.00 in an envelope with "for Mrs. Butler to kiss a frog" written on the front! We knew the kids really wanted us to hit our goal so they would be able to see Mrs. Butler kiss a frog! The BIG day will be on Tuesday November 24th at 1:45 pm, during the Thanksgiving Sing Along! You never know.... it might wind up on You Tube!

REGULAR PTA MEETING:

Join us on Monday November 16th at 8:00am in the cafeteria for our first morning PTA meeting! Come and find out about what is happening at Mills. You have questions? We have answers! After the meeting stay and listen to Adult & Child Behaviorist, Terri Moser on "How to Talk so Your Kids will Listen and Listen so your Kids will Talk"

Hope you all have a great week! See you around school!

REGULAR PTA MEETING:

Want to know what is happening at Mills? Please join us tomorrow Monday October 26th, 6:30 pm in the cafeteria for our next Regular PTA meeting. After a quick meeting the PTA Parent Education Committee presents a program with Unique Fire Safety, in conjunction with Fire Prevention Month. Come learn about Adult and Home fire prevention. You will be amazed at just how much we really don't know. And remember, the lives you save may be your families!!

AMAZING RACE:

I want to thank Robin Warnken for her creative thinking and dedication to making the Amazing Race..... INCREDIBLE!! What a fun time we all had doing the Amazing Race and the weather was perfect. Just like the TV show we got to travel all over the world and do challenges. Bummed that we missed out flight out of Miami to the Rain Forest but we got there in time to do the Zip-Line! Which was my kids favorite challenge! Thank you to the parents and kids who came out and helped with the stations. Events like these can't happen without your help. If you happen to see Robin around school give her a big "thank you" or shoot her an email, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. NO HASSLE:

We have extended the No Hassle fundraiser for one more week, so you have until Friday to get your donation in. Remember if we hit our goal of $20,000. Mrs Butler will dress up as a princess and kiss a REAL frog!!! We are close to our goal so help out and send your donation in today!

Hope you and your kids have a great week. Hope to see you at the PTA Meeting!

Our fall fundraiser is in full swing so get your No Hassledonation in today! Remember we are raising funds for the Kinder, Pre-K & PPCD playgrounds. With a school this size the playground is just not big enough to accommodate all the students and with your donation we will be able to replace what is there with bigger and better playground equipment! If you are interested in being on the committee to oversee this project please email me.

Don't forget the Amazing Race is on October 24th, get your team together today! This is always such a fun event that the kids and parents LOVE so if you are new to Mills you will want to be part of this. You are in for a real treat!

UPCOMING EVENTS:
October 13th at 8am in the Cafeteria
Mills PTA Parent Education Program Committee welcomes, Dr. Elizabeth Levy, in head starting the 2009-2010 speaker presentation program.
As a parent herself, Dr Levy understands the transition to parenthood is one of the most difficult as well as enjoyable. Dr Levy also understands that as parents, we may read books about what to expect from pregnancy and the birth process, but often don’t really understand the complicated issues of childhood and the natural process of child development. Dr. Levy helps give parents the tools by which they can best facilitate their child’s growth and development.
Thinking ahead:
We need a Spring Festival Chair. If you are interested in overseeing this incredible event please let me know. We are breaking it all down this year so things will not fall on one persons head. Here is what we need to get this up and running, below you will find a list and we will need a committee chair person for each:
-food
-bounce castles
-games
-volunteers
-posters/flyers
-guest speakers/visitors
This is a great opportunity to help out with the biggest event this school has! We can not do this without YOU, so please let me know if you are interested in helping with any of these areas.
Hope you and your kids have a great week. See you around school!

We had a nice turn out at our Regular PTA meeting last Monday night. It was great to see some new faces and I hope you continue to take part in the meetings, it is a great way to find out what is happening at Mills. At the meeting we were voting on how to spend the allotted money we make with the No Hassle Fundraiser this fall. We voted for improvements to the Kinder, Pre-K & PPCD playgrounds. If there is anyone who can help spearhead this project please contact me. So let's get it started! Send in your donation today!

There was a great question asked at the meeting last Monday and i want to share the answer with everyone: "How many fundraisers does the PTA do each year?" .... The PTA does 2 fundraisers a year. The 'No Hassle' in the fall and the 'Spring Festival' in the spring. With each fundraiser the PTA must give back 3 events/conveniences to the school. So for instance, t-shirts, directory, Amazing Race, Holidays Around the World, Family Fun Night, yearbook, school supplies, those are all conveniences. We do not plan to make any money with these events/conveniences so they are put on or sold at cost. That being said, the school will have their own fundraisers that are being done throughout the year.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES:
Another update on the school supply saga! Last week I informed you that we have cancelled our order last Wednesday with Geckler owned, Desktop School supplies. As unpredictable as ever they went ahead and shipped out another partial order the very next day. This order had most of the supplies needed to complete the order. We decided to keep the order and with the help of a few volunteers we were able to get the supplies to the teachers. As of now we are still missing kleenex, ziploc bags & tennis balls. The company assures us they will deliver the rest of the missing items. We are still out money that we had to spend to cover the missing supplies and hopefully be able to recoup some kind of refund from Geckler. I will keep you posted with any new information as it comes in.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

October 13th at 8am in the Cafeteria
Mills PTA Parent Education Program Committee welcomes, Dr. Elizabeth Levy, in head starting the 2009-2010 speaker presentation program.

Elizabeth Levy earned her Doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin, is a licensed psychologist in the state of Texas and has been in private practice for 10 years. Previously, as a member of a joint consortium between Columbia University and Cornell Medical Center, Dr. Levy was involved in innovative research looking at psychological factors in physiological health. SCHOOL SUPPLIES:

Well, where do I begin?... We were suppose to receive the rest of the 452 partial order school supply kits to complete our order. On Wednesday we received 1 partial order for 1 boy and 1 girl per grade level. Definitely not enough. We have had so much trouble dealing with this company for the past 5 weeks that we thought it would be best at this time to cancel the rest of our order and request a refund. A few of us went out and purchased spirals, crayons, map pencils, scissors, & glue to replace what was missing so the kids can have almost all their school supplies. At this point we are asking parents to purchase the rest of the supplies (which will be minimal) so your child can have his or her full supply request taken care of. The PTA will offer a % refund of what is left from the order. We are taking inventory of what was sent by Desktop School Supplies and what the PTA has purchased and we will send a flyer home with the information about the refund and what is still needed to be purchased. Not sure if you saw NBC news on Friday night but we have gotten the media involved here in town and in Minnesota (where the company supplying our supplies is based) where dozens and dozens of schools have been effected by this company. We as a PTA will look at our options on getting the rest of our $9,000.00 back and will discuss this at our regular PTA meeting next Monday night Sept, 28th.

AMAZING RACE:

It is that time of year when the Amazing Race Committee is organizing the 'big event'. If you would like to help with this great event please contact Robin Warnken, Amazing Race Chair. rwarnken@austin.rr.com If you are new to the school or have never participated in the Amazing Race you are in for a treat!!

REGULAR PTA MEETING:
Just a reminder that our first regular PTA meeting will be Monday September 28 at 6:30pm in the cafeteria, this will be an important one. Our members will be voting on how to allocate the funds we raise this year through fundraisers. By joining the PTA for $7 annually, you can vote on how we spend the money. We will also be discussing the best option on getting our money back from Desktop School Supplies. Remember YOU get to decide so join the PTA by September 21st to be able to vote!

I hope your kids had a great first week of school! I am sure it was fun for them to see friends they haven't seen sicne last school year and of course make new ones. I don't know about you but I was glad to get back into a routine!!

Nurse Kelly needs clothing, both boys and girls pants and shorts for kids at Mills. If you have pants or shorts that your child has out grown please send them to Nurse Kelly!

SHOUT OUTS: Have you seen the landscaping by the flag pole? Doesn't it look fabulous? Mary Gauthier has spent the week before school in 100 degree weather weeding, cutting back dead shrubs and mulching the flower bed. This is just in time for the beginning of school and the official 'Raising the Flag Ceremony". Mary THANK YOU for taking the time to help our school look beautiful! If you see Mary around the school please take time to thank her! I also want to thank Ken Manceaux and Pack 61 for their clean up efforts before school began to make sure Mills looked its best! They did the following:
-Picked up trash over the entire Mills campus.
-Trimmed grass along the front and side of the school.
-Cleaned, weeded, watered and added 20 bags of mulch to the butterfly garden.
-Watered and trimmed the trees up front (including removing a dead tree that the Pack had planted back in 1998)
-Trimmed and weeded a garden on the backside of the school.
-Swept and removed debris and rocks along all the major walkways

This is the kind of community family we have here at Mills and I am so proud to be a part of it!! Thank you all for your hard work and dedication.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITES: There are a few chair positions open this year please take a look at our website to see what is open. If you want to help out by chairing a committee or helping on one please email me.

• Tuesday August 18th
Class lists will be posted after 1:00pm. The PTA will be there handing out water bottles & popsicles until they run out! Please wait until Open House to talk to your child’s teacher; they are very busy this time of year getting their classrooms ready for the kids.
• Friday August 21st
Open House 4:00 - 6:00pm. Meet your child’s teacher and see the classroom. Have your child bring their school supplies and they can get them set up in the classroom.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES- if you preordered school supplies last spring you can pick them up in the cafeteria on Open House night from 3:00 – 5:00pm.
• Monday August 24th
First day of school!!! Remember the bell rings at 7:35am and the late bell rings at 7:45am. The PTA will be hosting “Kleenex & Coffee” in the Library after drop off.  Stop by for a cup of coffee and say hello!

If you are interested in serving on a PTA Chair or Committee please let me know. We have many opportunities big and small to fit any volunteer need.  Take a look at the open opportunities on this web site and if you have any questions about them please call or email me.
