The Mills Landscaping Work day on October 22, 2011

Thank you to all the volunteers who worked at the Mills Landscaping Work day on October 22, 2011.  Our main project was to define the natural path along the bike rack.  The district helped us by digging out the path with a Bobcat the day before.  We spent a few hours lining the path with limestone and filling it in with mulch.

While a handful of volunteers worked on the new trail our other volunteers worked hard on the following:

• weeding and mulching the flagpole and butterfly garden
• spreading the leftover playground mulch by the butterfly garden where the Bermuda has died
• spreading compost over the wildflower garden Ms McBride's life skills class started last spring
• top dressing the new sod with compost
• picking up loose rocks to edge the wildflower garden, fill dry creek bed and create tree rings for the three large oaks by the Lantana entrance
• creating tree ring with the left over limestone for the tree by the bike rack
• removing the dead trees planted in May that didn't survive our drought this summer
• trimming China berry trees by the portables
• picking up garbage

The beautification of our campus would not have been possible without the following volunteers:
Girl Scout troop 1707 (Jenny and Ava Neilson, Darcy and Reese Ludlow, Lillian Lee, M.E. Powell, Makenna Pogue and , Claire, Kathy, Sam, Sebastian, and Cassie Segura), Girl Scout troop 1708 (Susan and Isabelle Willi), Cub Scout Pack 61 (Travis Willi, Julie and Sean Hoover), Becca Thompson, Jessica and Addison Schmer, Allison and alumni Calista Woodall, Mark and Emily Ambler, Mike Fishbaugh, Shawn and Haley Popovich, Amanda and Haley Hyde, Emily Erington, Robert and Beau Bienvenu,  Jose Nunez, Kelly, Willow, Eli and Jeff Stacy, Mary Boothe, Tamara Cort , Bailey and Peyton Hodakievic, Laurie and Ian Cullicott, Renee Welsh, Santiago, Elena and Adolfo Montesinos, Jason and Stephen Gatej.

A special thank you to Dr. Tereshinski  for unlocking the building for us, Kate Conner for setting up the refreshment table and Chick-fil-A for donating the lemonade!  It was very much appreciated during the hot and sweaty work!

I also wanted to recognize Eagle Scout, Chris Elizondo, for retrofitting the kindergarten beds by the new outdoor classroom.  Last May, Chris planned and led a team to build the outdoor classroom and beds.  At the time, we were unaware of a district rule to keep all plantings at least four inches away from the building (moisture issues).  Once Chris was made aware of the problem, he took full ownership and addressed the issue.  Thank you Chris!
